Liv Brøgger Helm-Petersen completed a work placement as a Graduate Engineer at DS Stålkonstruktion
I graduated from Aalborg University as a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil and Construction Engineering. In this connection, I did my work placement at DS Stålkonstruktion in their structural engineering department. The placement was a good and instructive experience for me, where there was room to ask questions and learn along the way in the process. The start of the placement involved thorough training, where I was assigned a mentor who acted as support throughout the entire placement.
The placement at DS Stålkonstruktion has given me many good experiences to take with me, but most of all it has been a fantastic opportunity to get a proper insight into working life. At DS Stålkonstruktion, I was given responsibility for my own projects almost from day one, which meant that the placement became a good reflection of what an everyday life in the structural engineering department as a full-time employee would look like. At the same time, there was plenty of room for learning and sparring with my mentor throughout the whole process.
At DS Stålkonstruktion, I have not only learned a lot about the work in the structural engineering department, but also gained a good understanding of the whole process from start to finish. In the structural engineering department, I was responsible for the actual calculations on the projects I worked with, but the calculations don’t stand alone in the process. I therefore had close communication in each project with both project managers and detailers. The close collaboration with the other departments meant that I gained a better understanding of the execution of a steel structure. The conceived solutions cannot always be carried out in practice.
DS Stålkonstruktion is a production company, and there was therefore a focus on me gaining a good understanding of both the production and the assembly of the structures. I gained this understanding especially through guided tours of the production and construction site visits. Here I gained a far better insight into which processes are carried out in both production and assembly, as well as which choices you, as an engineer in the structural engineering department, can make to render these processes more efficient.
